But whats its benefit ?
Brother let you explain..

The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) is a unique number present in every Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) mobile phones. The British Approvals Board of Telecommunications (BABT) provides the IMEI number the phone manufacturers. The service provider can track the mobile device by using the IMEI number.
It can also identify the location, incoming calls and contacts.
What is your IMEI Number?
The IMEI number is located beneath the handset battery. You can use one of the following steps to identify the number in your device:
Dial the sequence *#06# in a Nokia model.
Press right,*, left, left,*, left, *, left in a Sony Ericsson model.
Use the about icon in an Iphone or Connect to ITunes to identify the unique number.
Use the sequence # * menu right arrow for a Motorola model.
It is a 15 digit unique number that denotes the orgin, model, and serial number of the device.
The structure of the number format is AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-D:
- AA: Refer to the Reporting Body Identifier. This belongs to an approved group that allocated the Type Allocation Code (TAC)
- BBBBBB: Denotes the remainder of the TAC
- CCCCCC: Manufacturer defines this sequence of the numbers for the Model.
- D: This indicates the number derived by Luhn check digit of the entire model or 0.
Theft - No more a profitable business
When any mobile device with the unique number is stolen or lost, the operator can track or block the device as per the user request. The local operator can add the IMEI number into an Equipment Identity
Register (EIR), which will also communicate the same to the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR).
The CEIR blacklists the device and the device will become unusable on any operator. This helps the individuals to prevent the mobile being used for any illegal purpose.
Which of the mobile devices does not support unique number?
Cheap mobile phones manufactured in China do not have an unique number. If the device lacks IMEI number, the operator will still route the call for these types of phones. But, this can lead to a national security concern for any country since it cannot identify the device from which the call is being initiated.
Government can enforce a rule to ban these mobile devices without unique numbers at any time.
What is the solution to the cheap Chinese phones in the market?
China's Telecommunication Terminal Testing & Approval Forum has regulated a law to provide international mobile equipment identity numbers to Chinese TD-SCDMA and GSM mobile phones. In the meanwhile, you get these Chinese mobile phones updated with the IMEI number using the available software in the market.
