Srinagar, J & K, India, (Greater Kashmir): A youth who was critically wounded in police firing in Warpora Sopur on Friday succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS on Saturday morning, taking the number of persons killed by police and [Indian] CRPF since June 11 to 50. Curfew continued to remain in force across the Valley barring uptown Srinagar, Ganderbal and Handwara where it was relaxed for a few hours.

Rameez Ahmed Reshi, 22, of Mundji Sopur who was shot in head by policemen passed away at SKIMS Soura this morning. When his body was brought to his native place, people took to streets and staged massive protests.
He was later laid to rest in the local martyrs graveyard amid pro-freedom slogans.

Curfew was relaxed for some time in uptown Srinagar. No relaxation was given in downtown areas where police and CRPF men imposed a strict curfew. Officials said curfew was relaxed in areas falling under police stations Raj Bagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Karan Nagar, Kothi Bagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Nishat, Shergari and Pantha Chowk from 11.30 AM to 2 PM. The deal was later extended to 4 PM.

People ventured out of homes to buy food items and other essentials. In many localities, people staged protests during the deal, raising pro-freedom slogans.

In the evening curfew was relaxed in areas under Sadder and Nowgam police stations for a couple of hours from 5 PM.

Protests also erupted in the uptown areas including Natipora, Chanapora and Rambagh later in the day. The Rapid Action Force, which has been brought in the Valley to quell the ongoing protests, staged a flag march in the downtown here for the second day running. The march extended to the volatile areas of Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal and several other localities during which many people attempted to attack their convoy by stones at several places.

Officials said the RAF was not deployed in the areas but were only conducting flag marches. CRPF spokesman Prabhakar Tripathi said the march was staged in the downtown areas including several localities along Nallahmar Road which has seen massive protests. The RAF men in blue uniforms with the sirens of their vehicles blowing loud caught attention of several people as they marched through the downtown. Inhabitants in the curfew-bound localities peeped out of windows to see the convoy.

Witnesses said at several places, including at Khanyar and Rajouri Kadal, young boys yelled and booed at them and attempted to hurl stones at them. The march, however, ended peacefully.

A woman who had sustained injuries during clashes a few days back at Basant Bagh here succumbed to her injuries today. Ayesha Sheikh, 48, breathed her last at SK Institute of Medical Sciences. Doctors said that she had chest injuries.

“Her rib was broken and the broken rib had pierced her heart. It was an injury inflicted by a blunt object,” said a doctor on duty. It was not clear whether she was hit by a teargas shell or by a stone.

Pertinently, police and CRPF troopers during the past few days have been venturing into residential areas and hurling stones on houses and damaging property.

    SOUTH KASHMIR:

Curfew remained imposed in almost all the major towns of South Kashmir for the ninth straight day even as there were reports of protests from various villages. In Islamabad town curfew was strictly enforced in the old town areas as well as the civilian areas of Khanabal-Pahalgam Road with shoot at sight orders in place. However, late in the evening when the deployment was reduced clashes erupted in many areas of the old town and certain areas of K.P Road between the forces and protesters.

The youth resorted to stone pelting and police and CRPF men retaliated by lobbing tear gas canisters and firing several rounds in the air. In Bijbehara town curfew was strictly enforced and shoot at sight orders were put in place.

Reports of peaceful protest demonstrations were however received from various other areas of the district including Sangam, Shangus and Achabal.

Thousands of people including women and children took to streets raising pro-freedom and anti-India slogans and staged massive demonstrations demanding action against the Rashtriya Rifles personnel for beating up the civilians without any provocation.

The troopers of 32-RR had beaten up two villagers Reyaz Bashir and Khrusheed Ahmed Dar yesterday after the Watergam march passed off peacefully.

At Bomai, Sopur, locals said that [Indian] Border Security Force personnel beat up several pedestrians without any provocation.

“They also barged into residential houses, thrashed up inmates and ransacked household items,” locals alleged.

Reports from Ganderbal and Handwara said curfew was relaxed in many areas during which people came out of their homes and brought essentials.

In north Kashmir’s Varmul town and its peripheries, the situation remained calm during the day as a strict curfew was in place.
