Jammu & Kashmir: 4 killed by Indian security
Srinagar, J & K, India, (GK News Network): Four persons were killed and around 150 injured in police and [Indian] CRPF firing across north Kashmir on Friday. Paramilitary personnel also fired upon protesters in Srinagar injuring three persons.
With today’s fatalities, the death toll in the police and CRPF actions in the fresh cycle of protests that started on June 11 has gone up to 56. The victims include 26 teenagers – two among them 9 year old – and two girls.
SOPUR:
Two youth were killed and two others wounded when paramilitary CRPF troopers resorted to indiscriminate firing on a procession at Bomai Sopur Friday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that after Friday prayers thousands of people from Bomai, Logripora, Shiva and adjoining villages staged peaceful demonstrations to protests against the civilian killings.
“As the procession reached near the 92 battalion CRPF camp, the troopers without any provocation fired upon the procession killing two persons on the spot and wounding two others,” they said.
The deceased—both residents of Logripora—were identified as Arif Ahmed Mir son of Maqsood Mir, 18, and Sameer Ahmed Lone son of Muhammad Maqbool, 25.
The injured were identified as Shakir Ahmed Ganai and Rameez Ahmed Lone.
“Of the four injured, two were brought dead to the hospital,” a doctor at sub-district hospital Sopur told Greater Kashmir. He said one of the wounded was referred to Bone and Joint Hospital.
Massive protests broke out in the area and its neighbourhood as people staged pro-freedom and anti-India demonstrations against the killings.
Large reinforcement of police and CRPF was rushed to the area to deal with the protesters.
Police and CRPF again used force on the protesters injuring several of them.
After firing on the protesters at Bomai, CRPF men unleashed a reign of terror in the area. Residents alleged that they barged into houses and took away valuables from poor households after ransacking them.
“We were not part of the protests but did saw CRPF men targeting youth who were peacefully protesting. Yet they barged into our house and beat us. We ran for our safety only to return to see that valuables, including gold ornaments are missing,” said a resident of Bomai. Three more persons were wounded in Bomai when CRPF troopers again fired upon mourners carrying the bodies of the youth. The condition of one injured woman is stated to be critical.
KUPWARA:
A teenager was killed and 3 others, including a 60-year old woman, injured when paramilitary CRPF opened fire on a group of Nimazees heading towards a Masjid to offer the dawn prayers in Trehgam town early this morning.
Eyewitnesses said people were heading towards a Masjid to offer the dawn prayers at Mirpora Mohalla in Trehgam town. “They were confronted by CRPF personnel on the grounds that curfew was in force in the area. CRPF men caught hold of one of them, Abdul Satar Sheikh, Muazzin of the Masjid, and started thrashing him ruthlessly,” eyewitnesses said.
This, they said, led to an argument. “The CRPF men opened fire killing a teenager and injuring others.”
The deceased has been identified as Mudasir Ahmed Zargar, 16, son of Ghulam Hassan Zargar, resident of Trehgam. Among the injured were 60-year-old Jana Begum wife of Muhammad Sidiq Malik. Doctors said she has a firearm injury in her right leg and has been referred to Srinagar.
After the firing and news about the death of the teenager, massive protesters broke out in the area even as Rapid Action Force was called in to stage a flag march in the town to stave off protests. However people didn’t relent and came out in large numbers carrying the body of the slain youth. They raised pro-freedom slogans and marched towards Trehgam chowk. Paramilitary forces, police and personnel of RAF tried to disperse them by baton charging, firing teargas ammunition and firing bullets.
Two persons were injured in the police action later. They have been identified as Haji Muhammad Sikander and Bashir Ahmad Lone. Injured were rushed to Srinagar for treatment.
Clashes continued between police and protesters throughout the day. Reports in the evening said 15 persons were injured in the police action.
Locals said CRPF men misbehaved with women during the protests.
PATTAN:
A 65-year-old civilian was killed and five others wounded in two separate incidents of firing in Pattan and Palhallan on Friday.
Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that policemen and CRPF troopers fired upon protesters this morning in Pattan town wounding Ali Muhammad Khanday, Nazir Ahmed Nazroo and Javid Ahmed.
They said Khanday was hit in the head and was shifted to SKIMS where he succumbed to injuries in the afternoon.
The locals told Greater Kashmir that police has not handed over his body to the family for burial till late evening.
Meanwhile, two youth were critically wounded in Palhallan Pattan when police and CRPF men fired upon the protesters after Friday prayers.
Eyewitnesses said two youth Irshad Ahmed Wani and Showkat Ahmed Malla were shot in abdomen by forces this afternoon.
The doctors at sub-district hospital Kreeri referred them to SMHS Srinagar and there condition is stated to be critical.
Thousands of people staged demonstrations in Kanli Bagh, Noor Bagh in Varmul. People also staged massive protests in old town and Delina.
Thousands of people today protested in Kunzer Tangmarg after Friday prayers.

Three persons were injured in old city areas of Nowhatta, Khanyar and Nowpora when troopers of paramilitary CRPF opened fire on protests after Friday prayers.
Witnesses said massive protest demonstrations erupted in the downtown areas after prayers at dawn, which intensified by the afternoon. Youth staged protests at Shiraz Chowk Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowpora, Zaldagar and Bohri Kadal localities. They pelted police and CRPF men with stones.
Witnesses said CRPF men opened fire at Nowhatta and Nowpora when a procession coming from Jamia Masjid was passing through the areas.
At Nowhatta, witnesses said six youth sustained injuries when CRPF men opened fire on protesters. The injured were shifted to SMHS and SKIMS for treatment.
Doctors at SKIMS identified the three injured (with firearm injuries) as Muhammad Younis, 22, of Khanyar; Waseem Ahmad, 21, of Basant Bagh, and Suhail Ahmad, 20, of Habak.
The injured admitted to SMHS hospital were identified as Toufeeq Ahmad Lone, 16, of Nowpora; Arif Ahmad of Nowhatta, Ubaid Ahmad of Nowhatta.
In uptown Ram Bagh, police and CRPF men lobbed tear smoke shells on Namazees who had gathered in large numbers on the roads.
“As soon as they stood up in rows for prayers, police and CRPF men lobbed tear gas shells on the Namazees injuring several of them,” witnesses said.
At Nowpora and Khayam, locals alleged that CRPF men while chasing away protesters barged into residential areas and ransacked houses.
“They indulged in plunder and damaged property,” locals said.
Paramilitary CRPF troopers barged into two medical shops near Natipora and damaged medicines worth tens of thousands of rupees.
Reports said that a CRPF party landed on the spot mid-afternoon and seeing the medical shops—New Khan Dispensary and Sami medicos- open entered them and damaged medicine without any provocation. Reports said prior to the incident a group of youth had engaged the CRPF party in stone pelting.
Locals of Azad Basti Natipora said that personnel of 178 Bn CRPF thrashed several people in the evening without any provocation. “They beat up the residents and many motor cycle riders to pulp,” a local said. People of the area were out on roads in the evening protesting against the CRPF high handedness.
BUDGAM:
Pro-freedom protests broke out in many areas of this central Kashmir district after Friday prayers with police and CRPF using force at number of places to disperse the protestors resulting in injuries to scores of them.
Police and CRPF resorted to aerial firing and tear gas shelling to disperse a march at Nagam which was heading towards Chadoora to join the protests after Friday prayers.
Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that at least six persons were injured in the action. Pro-freedom protests were also held in Chadoora after Friday prayers. Scores of people gathered in the main Chowk Chadoora chanting pro-freedom slogans.
Pro-freedom and anti-government protests were also held at many places in Wathora, Kralpora, Mochu and on the city outskirts in Chanapora.
Protestors were seen assembling in circles at many places and chanting pro-freedom and anti-police and anti-CRPF slogans.
BANDIPORA:
Thousands of people took to roads after Friday prayers and staged pro-freedom protests in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
After the conclusion of prayers, people, young and old, from Ajas, Gamru, Papchan and other areas assembled near Jamia Masjid in the town. They raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
From Jamia Masjid, they marched towards Martyrs Graveyard. They later dispersed peacefully.
In Papchan, youth engaged CRPF personnel in clashes by pelting stones on them. The clashes were going on till last reports came in.
Protests were also reported from other villages of the district including Qazipora, Ashtangoo, Aloosa, Hajin, Sumbal, Safapora and Saderkoot Bala.

Scores of persons were injured when police and paramilitary forces used force to disperse peaceful pro-freedom processions in many areas of South Kashmir.
In Mattan area of Islamabad, people in large numbers after Friday prayers assembled in the main chowk and started marching towards Islamabad town.
However, police and CRPF deployed there resorted to baton charge and fired tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters injuring 20 of them.
The injured were admitted in district hospital Islamabad while two critically injured were shifted to Srinagar.
In old town of Islamabad restrictions were strictly enforced and the movement of people was curtailed. Though the congregational prayers were offered in all the centrally located masjids including Jamia Masjid Hanfia, Jamia Masjid Ahlihadith and Rehat-Ded Masjid but they witnessed thin attendance as mostly elderly people were allowed to go.
However, in the Khanabal-Pahalgam (K.P) road area of the town where restrictions were comparatively less people took to streets after Friday prayers and organized massive pro-freedom demonstrations at Khanabal, Naibasti, Laizibal and Gulshanabad.
Several people were injured in Bijbehara and Dooru where police and CRPF men used force to disperse pro-freedom processions.
In Kulgam town people in large numbers gathered outside the masjids and tried to carry out pro-freedom march. However, police resorted to baton charge and fired tear gas shells injuring many. Later, youth fought pitched battles with police and CRPF.
Massive pro-freedom demonstrations also rocked the South Kashmir town of Shopian. Thousands of people after offering Friday prayers gathered outside the Jamia Masjid and staged pro-freedom demonstrations. The protesters while carrying placards reading ‘Go India Go Back’ marched through the streets of the town. Though the procession went off peacefully but later some people tried to attack Deputy Commissioner’s office following which police and CRPF posted there resorted to tear gas shelling and fired several rounds in the air.
Reports of massive pro-freedom demonstrations were also received from Pulwama, Kakpora, Tral, Awantipora, Pampora, Samboora and Khrew areas of the Pulwama district also.
GANDERBAL:
After Friday prayers, youth assembled outside central Jamia Masjid Kangan and took out a procession chanting pro-freedom slogans. Youth marched through the streets of the town and later dispersed peacefully.
In Ganderbal, people staged peaceful protests at Chak Dudarhama.
In Lar tehsil, protests were held in Kurhama. Protesters marched up to Baroosa and on return when the protesting youth blocked the Ganderbal-Safapora road police fired tear smoke shells and chased the protesters away.
POLICE SPEAKS:
A police statement said that police and troops ‘exhibited restraint but had to fire when mobs did not pay any heed to repeated calls for dispersal.’
