Jammu & Kashmir: Civilian killed in Bandipora by Indian army
Kudara (Bandipora), J & K, India, (Greater Kashmir): [Indian] Army killed a civilian in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district Thursday morning. Though the police say he was mistakenly caught in an ambush but people maintain that the killing was intentional as he was fired at close range without any provocation.
Manzoor Ahmed, 38, son of Ghulam Nabi of Upper Kudara was killed when troops from 14 Rashtriya Rifles laid an ambush near Lashkudara village, reportedly in order to trap a group of militants.
Locals said Khan was shot dead when he was on way to home from the pastures. Khan is the father of a child who used to rear animals of the local people. “The killing is intentional as the army killed him from close range. If it had been a case of mistaken identity then why did army try to hide the body,” they said. “We demand a probe into the killing,” they said.
“It is sheer injustice. Government should investigate into the killing and killers should be punished,” said the locals.
Block Medical Officer Bandipora, Bashir Ahmed Malik, said, “Police came up with the body of Manzoor Ahmed who was hit by five bullets.”
Defence spokesperson Lt. Col JS Brar said, "He was mistakenly caught in ambush. He was given first aid, however he expired."
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, SM Sahai said, “He was a civilian mistakenly caught in an ambush. We are ascertaining the facts of the incident.”
The personnel of 14 RR camped at Chuntimulla harassed media men and didn’t allow them to cover the incident and the funeral procession of Manzoor Ahmed.
“Army snatched our cameras and harassed us. They threatened us of dire consequences if the incident is reported in newspapers,” said Parvaiz Ahmed, a CNS reporter.
