    Srinagar, J & K, India, (Greater Kashmir): Four persons, including two women, were injured in south Kashmir�s Shopian town after [Indian] forces opened fire on protesters during a cordon and search operation while authorities re-imposed curfew across several parts of the Valley in response to a protest march called by the Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference.

    Witnesses said army troopers of 62 Rashtriya Rifles and SOG of police cordoned off Nagbal village in Zainapora, Shopian early in the morning as they were looking for the militants reportedly present in the area.

    �People were ordered to assemble at a place near local graveyard and then an identification parade was conducted. During parade army arrested at least 16 youth, most of them schoolboys,� they said.

    The students were taken inside the building of government school, Arpara where locals said they were tortured.

    �Many people broke the cordon and raised pro-freedom slogans as they saw women, who resisted arrest of youth, being manhandled by troopers,� they said.

    People from neighbouring villages poured into the streets and marched towards the village after the word about the incident spread in the area.

    As the protests intensified, the army troopers initially fired into the air and later directly upon the protesters, the locals alleged.

    Witnesses said three persons were injured in the firing and they were shifted to a nearby hospital. They included Amir Ahmad Dar, 19, who had a bullet injury in his right leg; Salima Akhtar and Afiya Jan, both had firearm injuries in shoulders.

    Amir and Salima were later shifted to Bone and Joint hospital, Srinagar.

    Another teenager, Touseef Ahmad, was injured as he was severely thrashed by the troopers. The Army�s Srinagar-based spokesman was not available for comment on the incident.

    Meanwhile, curfew was clamped in Srinagar, Varmul, Bandipora and Kupwara today to counter the Hurriyat Conference call for march to Varmul town. Restrictions under section 144 of CrPC remained in place in the rest of the districts and towns of Valley.

    A police spokesman said the curfew was relaxed in Srinagar and Handwara later in the day.

    In Handwara relaxation were announced from 12 noon to 3 pm while in Srinagar curfew was relaxed after 3 pm.

    In Kupwara, Kralpora and Trehgam curfew was lifted from 2 pm onwards. In Sopur, from 5: 30 pm to 7 pm.

    During curfew relaxation protests broke out in several pockets of the city including Batamaloo, Bohri Kadal, Kani Kadal, Safa Kadal, Saraf Kadal localities.

    Police later reimposed curfew in Batamaloo while residents of Nowpora, and Dangerpora in Sekidafar area of the city alleged that CRPF men ventured into residential areas and damaged properties.

    Residents of Hajin staged massive protests after a youth Showkat Ahmad Dar was arrested by police early in the morning. Demanding release of Showkat, the protesters marched towards Hajin town where they demonstrated in the evening.

    In Palhalan, Pattan, locals said a joint party of police and army detained three teenagers namely Asif Ahmad Mir, Irfan Ahmad Mir and Omar Javed Mir.

    �The troopers venture into villages and beat up people without any provocation. Today they arrested three more youth,� locals said.
    On Saturday, they had arrested two youth namely Muhammad Yousuf and Me�raj-ud-din Lone of Palhalan.
