Jammu & Kashmir: Restrictions in old city, North Kashmir towns

Srinagar, J & K, India, (GK NEWS NETWORK): The Government on Friday imposed curfew-like restrictions in several areas of the summer capital here and in North Kashmir even as Hurriyat Conference (G) had called people to resume normal activities.

Restrictions were placed in the areas falling under jurisdictions of police stations Maharaj Gunj, Safakadal, Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar and Batamaloo here, police said.

Similarly, restrictions were in place in Varmul town, Delina, Palhalan, Pattan, Kunzar and Tangmarg in Varmul district; in Kupwara town, Trehgam, Kralpora, Handwara town, Chotipora and Kulangam in district Kupwara. Due to restrictions in Nowhatta, no Friday prayers were held at historic Jamia Masjid.

Since the beginning of the unrest in June, Friday prayers have been allowed only on four Fridays during the month of Ramadan.

The chief priest of the Masjid and Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under house arrest today.

Protests broke out in several places across the city in the day.

At Chanapora, people including women blocked roads and staged protests. They were demanding release of the youth who they said were arrested by police from the locality.

They said six youth namely Muhktar Ahmad Lone, Javaid Ahmad Baba, Abid Ahmad Bhat, Zakir Ahmad, Zahid Ahmad Sheikh—all residents of Chanapora and Manzoor Ahmad of Natipora were arrested by police.

Post-prayer protests broke out in Shopian and Pulwama towns in south, Sopur and Varmul towns in north and Galwanpora, Hyderpora, Sheikhpora and Humhama areas of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Police baton charged and lobbed tear smoke ammunition to disperse the protesters. However, no one was injured.

In uptown and civil lines areas of the city, shops and business opened in the morning while traffic also plied normally.

Reports said police conducted a raid in the uptown Barzulla locality on a Gym and arrested five youth.
