Jammu & Kashmir: Civil curfew anger at Obama visit to India leads to shutdown in Valley

Srinagar, J & K, Indial (Greater Kashmir): Life was paralyzed across the Valley on Saturday on the civil curfew call of Hurriyat Conference (G) in view of US Presidents India visit. A youth was shot by a rubber bullet in face during clashes in Sopore town.

The Hurriyat had asked people to observe civil curfew for three days from today to draw attention of US President Barack Obama towards Kashmir issue during his India visit and to commemorate the anniversary of Jammu massacre in 1947. A shutdown was observed in Srinagar city and other districts as shops, business establishments and schools remained closed and public transport was off the roads.

Though authorities lifted curfew from nine police stations of the city, police and paramilitary CRPF troopers were deployed in volatile areas of old city. In north Kashmir, restrictions were imposed in Sopore, Palhalan and Delina this morning.

Hundreds of people including children and women staged protests in Langate area of Kupwara against the arrest of a youth. Raising pro-freedom and anti-government slogans, the protesters were demanding release of Abdur Rouf Pandit who was detained by police on Friday night.

The locals alleged that he has been falsely implicated in stone-pelting case, but police denied the charge.

Clashes also broke out in Sopore town in evening after a civilian was wounded in police firing. Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that a rubber bullet hit Muhammad Saleem of Mohalla Taliyan in face and he was referred to Srinagar for treatment. The situation was tense in the town.

Shutdown was also observed in Baramulla, Handwara and Kupwara towns. Reports reaching from south Kashmir said that complete strike was observed in Islamabad (Anantnag), Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopain districts.

Late in the evening scores of youth took to streets in Khanabal and old town areas of Islamabad and clashed with cops. Raising pro-freedom slogans, the protesters pelted stones on the cops, but were chased away.

A police spokesman said that situation remained normal in the Valley.
