Jammu & Kashmir: Clashes in Valley

    By Umer Maqbool Dar
Srinagar, J & K, India, (Greater Kashmir): The Valley observed partial shutdown on Saturday on the call of Hurriyat Conference (G), after witnessing normalcy for the past eight days.

Life was partially paralysed in Srinagar and other districts of the Valley today, owing to shutdown call of the Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Though curfew was not imposed anywhere, police and paramilitary CRPF troopers were, however, deployed in large numbers in sensitive areas to prevent the people from staging protests.

People took to streets in HMT, Elahi Bagh, Bachpora, Fateh Kadal and Safa Kadal areas and pelted stones on the cops and paramilitary CRPF forces, but they were chased away.

Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that clashes broke out in Barthana area of city outskirts, when police arrested Bilal Ahmad son of Ghulam Mohammad Mir this afternoon. The clashes were continuing in area till late evening.

The police also fired teargas canisters on the protesting youth at Azad Gunj Baramulla, forcing them to disperse.

Clashes also broke out at Pahoo in Pulwama district this afternoon, after protesters pelted stones on the cops. The locals alleged, that police detained three youth, during the protests.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that miscreants today morning pelted stones on a School Bus near Zaldagar area of Srinagar.

He said, two lady teachers were injured and windowpanes of the bus were also damaged in the incident.

He said that police arrested wanted “miscreant” identified as Bilal Ahmad Fafoo son of Ghulam Muhammad resident of Bund-Parimpora, Srinagar this afternoon.

Police said Bilal was involved in abetting and instigating stone pelting in the area and was wanted in a number of stone pelting incidents. “Some people resorted to stone pelting on the police. One cop suffered injury in the incident. However, police exercised maximum restraint to avoid any clash” the spokesman added.
