  • Jammu & Kashmir: Geelani, Mirwaiz under house arrest

    By Umer Maqbool Dar
Srinagar, J & K, India, (Greater Kashmir): The chairmen of both factions of Hurriyat Conference continued to be under house arrest on Friday.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said government has put curbs on the movement of Syed Ali Geelani for the past 72 days. He said that Geelani would address a news conference on Saturday at 2:00 pm at his Hyderpora residence.

He reiterated the call for strike on Saturday as per already announced protest calendar of the amalgam.

The chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was prevented by Government for 10th consecutive week from offering congregational Friday prayers.

Though authorities allowed congregational Friday prayers for second week at Jamia Masjid here, however Mirwaiz continued to remain under house arrest at his Nigeen residence.

Mirwaiz was also placed under house arrest last Thursday, a day before government allowed congregational Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid after restrictions for eight weeks.

Terming his house arrest as revengeful and cowardice act, Mirwaiz said to what extent the rulers can stoop for protecting their seat of power and interests was an eye-opener to the people.

The Hurriyat Conference has condemned the curbs on Mirwaiz for the past four months in performing his religious duties.

Condemning his house detention, a spokesman of the amalgam termed it a deep-rooted conspiracy of keeping him away from the Muslims of Kashmir.

Democratic Freedom Party chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah was also placed under house arrest.
