Al Qaeda men shoot down six in Yemen

SANAA: Suspected Al Qaeda gunmen killed six soldiers, including two officers, in three separate attacks yesterday in several restive regions of Yemen, officials said.
The country is a key US ally in the war against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which has plotted several foiled attacks against the US.
The bloodshed comes amid mounting protests against the regime of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who claims to be the guarantor of security in the deeply tribal and impoverished country.
Gunmen shot dead four soldiers from Yemen's elite Republican Guard near Marib, about 170km east of Sanaa, a local official said. "
Al Qaeda militants shot and killed an army intelligence officer in the city of Zinjibar, in southern Abyan province, a local official said.
Another officer was later shot dead in the city of Sayun, in the eastern province of Hadramut.
Meanwhile, government supporters wielding knives and handguns attacked protesters in southern Yemen yesterday, leaving one dead during the latest in weeks of demonstrations demanding the president step down.
Eyewitnesses said by telephone that "government thugs" marched towards the protesters in the southern province of Ibb without being stopped by security forces.
Thirty-seven were also injured in the attack that took place on the main square, where protesters have been camping for a week.
The clashes came after some 200,000 protesters in Ibb, 190km south of Sanaa, took part in a demonstration on Friday calling on Saleh to quit.
The opposition movement vowed yesterday to intensify protests against the regime.
With violence gripping the country, Washington and London advised their citizens to consider leaving the country.
The opposition Common Forum called on protesters to step up demonstrations which have left at least 19 people dead since January 27, according to an AFP toll. Amnesty International counts at least 27 dead.
"We have called upon the people to widen demonstrations and escalate the peaceful struggle in all regions until he (Saleh) is left with one option, that is to leave," said a leading member of the forum. The ultimatum came a day after Saleh dismissed opposition calls for his resignation by the end of the year and vowed to serve out his current mandate until 2013.
