FREE Online Event:
PREPARING FOR RAMADAN 2013

Have you ever wondered why it is difficult to concentrate in your prayer? Or why your faith throughout the year is not on a high like it is during Ramadan or through Hajj? Maybe it is because we usually jump straight from a phone conversation into Takbir or because we just go with the flow in Ramadan and are influenced by the environment around us and not our own ‘real’ feelings.
A lot of us usually live life and have our faith dependent on an upcoming major event i.e. “I’m going to start reading a page of Quran a day as soon as Ramadan starts; I’m going to start praying Qiyam every night when I come back from hajj; or, I’m going to stop smoking when my child is born.” And because of this way of thinking we usually end up with an anticlimax; we don’t end up giving up smoking, we don’t end up praying Qiyam and we start reading Quran but then get back to our normal old self after a few days or weeks.
This is because these ‘statements’ or ‘feelings’ are based on impulse and not a real thought out plan. We usually don’t prepare for Ramadan or hajj or have a plan for our faith to stay at the increase; we just go with the flow and expect it all to happen. Well, it doesn’t!
Wouldn’t you love to enter the month of Ramadan on a real high and have the effects of this beautiful month be a permanent impact on your life thereafter? How can this be done? Join Eaalim's FREE Online Event:
Ibn Abi 'Atiq came to visit him and said to us, "Treat him with black cumin. Take five or seven seeds and crush them (mix the powder with oil) and drop the resulting mixture into both nostrils, for 'Aisha (Radi-Allahu 'anha) has narrated to me that she heard the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) saying, 'This black cumin is healing for all diseases except As-Sam.' Aisha (Radi-Allahu 'anha) said, 'What is As-Sam?' He said, 'Death."

Paradise through ALLAH's mercy

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

I heard ALLAH's Apostle (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) saying, "The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise." (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet's companions) said, 'Not even you, O ALLAH's Apostle?' He said, "Not even myself, unless ALLAH bestows His favor and mercy on me." So be moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability: and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to ALLAH."
I visited the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) during his ailments and he was suffering from a high fever. I said, "You have a high fever. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرحْمَنِ الرحِيْمِ
Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,
Peace, Blessings and Mercy of Allah unto you.

For the full article with footnotes see original here.

Despite not counting myself from amongst those that initially called for a boycott of the recent lecture conducted by Sister Yasmin Mogahed in England , I believe that those who did call for such are fully within their rights to ask for it. They have exercised their scholarly prerogative, assessed the issue and made their decision on the proofs provided to them and for that they will earn the reward based on their Ijtihaad.

Presently, while people have been faffing around trying to defend the lecturer, the venue, the right for sisters to study, the organizers and many other things, they have failed to address the crucial points which I touched on in my generic article written a few months ago on the subject of 'young females addressing mixed audiences' It is even claimed that some scholars, 'giants' in fact, defended the lecturer through their Twitter and Facebook accounts and yet they did not present any credible scholarly response to the initial article.

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Abbas (radi Allah anhu) that the Apostle of Allah said: "Were people to be given in accordance to their claims, men would [unjustly] claim the wealth and blood of others. However, the onus of proof is upon the claimant, and the taking of an oath is upon him who denies.

As many of us are aware, Islam has a set the highest principles to ensure fairness by which claims are to be made and disagreements are to be settled. This principle assumes that the defendant's integrity is intact and they are free from any blame, however if a plaintiff should make a claim, the claim must not be accepted automatically, but the onus is upon them to substantiate these claims.

A wonderful example of this occurred while Sayyiduna Ali (radia Allah anho) was the Ameer al-Mumineen (Khalifah) and his armour was stolen by a Jewish subject. The Jew cunningly knew the above principle so when Ali (radia Allah anhu) approached him the Jew immediately requested that they go and settle this with the Muslim judge. When they reached the judge, Ali (radia Allah anhu) complained to the Chief Judge (Shurayh al-Qadi) that his armour was stolen by the Jew. Shurayh al-Qadi turned to the Jew and asked him regarding the armour. The Jew said, "This is my armour and it is in my hands" Shurayh then asked Ali (radia Allah anhu) to provide his proof or witnesses. Ali (radia Allah anhu) provided two witnesses, his freed slave and his son. As the testimony of the son in favour of his father is rejected, Ali (radia Allah anhu) was unable to prove his case and the armour was judged to be the Jews. The Jew seeing that even the leader of all Muslims is judged against according to this principle immediately became Muslim.

Consequently, it follows that this feeble slave of Allah must also provide the proofs for the reservations that I have regarding this issue, therefore allow me now to succinctly establish the proofs and ask the questions directly in the hope that we no longer continue to beat around the bush, but collectively reach the truth in this matter.

I respectfully request that those who want to offer rulings on the permissibility of young female speakers lecturing mixed audiences should not rely on conjecture or non-academic Facebook and Twitter responses with snide remarks, rather they should make a decent academic effort to silence their critics with their proofs as has been the tradition in scholarly disagreement for hundreds of years.

THE CAUSES FOR DISAGREEMENT

FIRST CONTENTION
The use of make-up by females in front of non-Mahram males.

Action
Upon requesting over a dozen sisters, to view numerous clips, it was unanimously agreed that Sister Yasmin can be seen clearly wearing make-up while standing in front of a mixed-gender audience and lecturing.

The proof
The sister without make-up Yasmin Mogahed: When You Struggle Day To Day To Do Basics - YouTube
The sister with make-up Yasmin Mogahed Q & A Part 2 - YouTube

The questions
After informing women that it would be better for them to remain in their homes, but providing the dispensation that women may leave their homes, did Allah (SWT) not categorically forbid females from committing al-Tabaruj in the Quran?

And abide quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance;

Did Allah also not offer a dispensation especially for the older women that they may neglect the wearing of the outer garment, and was this also not dependant on the fulfillment of a condition?

Such elderly women as are past the prospect of marriage- there is no blame on them if they lay aside their (outer) garments, provided they make not a wanton display of their beauty: but it is best for them to be modest: and Allah is One Who sees and knows all things.

That condition was that they do not make a wanton display of their beauty. This verse was for the elderly women, does it not follow then that young women -who do not have the dispensation of neglecting the outer garment- must also not make a wanton display of their beauty? What more wanton a display can there be than a woman applying make-up to embellish her face?

Did Allah also not command that Muslims (male and female) to not commit any action that would draw us closer to Zina?

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

Did the Ulama not say that al-Tabaruj is one of the methods that lead to Zina because it seeks to magnetize the opposite gender which then opens a door leading to Zina?

SECOND CONTENTION
The female lecturer speaks softly, tells jokes and even laughs during her lectures.

The proof
There are many examples of this spread out through her lectures: The following Youtube clip "Keeping the Heart Alive" with Ustadha Yasmin Mogahed - YouTube from 41:15-42:15

The question
Allah states in the Quran in Surah al-Ahzab:

إِنِ اتَّقَيْتُنَّ فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِالْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ الَّذِي فِي قَلْبِهِ مَرَضٌ وَقُلْنَ قَوْلًا مَّعْرُوفًا

"If you fear Allah then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should be moved to desire [you], but speak with appropriate speech."

So is laughing in front of men not more of a temptation for them and is this not a breach of the Haya that a lady should have in front of the opposite gender?

THIRD CONTENTION
The sister is clearly wearing dazzling eye-catching clothing that would attract the attention of people unnecessarily.

The proof
Again, numerous clips that show this colourful clothing- some are:

The question

How did the scholars interpret the following verses in particular the commandment for women not to reveal their adornment?

And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers that you might succeed.

Is it not true that scholars such as Imam al-Nawawi (RA) and Imam al-Dhababi (RA) as well as dozens of others have stated that the clothing that a woman wears when she leaves the confines of her home must not in itself attract unwanted attention by the designs and colours it bears? Did Imam al-Dhahabi (RA) not state in his famous text entitled "al-Kaba'ir" (The Major Sins) the following:

"From the actions for which a woman invites curse is the wearing of perfume when leaving the house and the wearing of mixed-coloured clothing and … all of these are from al-Tabaruj and are severely despised by Allah and Allah despises this person in this world and in the hereafter."

Is there such a thing as zina of the eyes? Would the eyes then not be more attracted to something or someone that stood out from the rest of the crowd by the glittery clothing they were wearing or have the scholars above been unreasonable in what they said?

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (radi Allah anhu) who said that that the Prophet (salalahu alayhi wasalam) stated: “Allah has decreed upon every son of Adam (alayhi salam) his share of zina which he will unavoidably commit. The zina of the eyes is gazing, the zina of the tongue is speaking, one may wish and desire and the private parts confirm or deny it.”

FOURTH CONTENTION
A female lecturer traverses distances that exceed those permitted for a believing woman to travel when there is no urgent need for her to do so.

The proof
It is well known that the sister has been traveling throughout the USA and abroad well before she married and not in the company of a Mahram

The questions
Has it not been narrated in numerous authentic Ahadith that it is not permissible for a woman to travel without a Mahram. Then on what grounds has it suddenly become permissible when there is no pressing urgency?

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) the Messenger of Allah (salalahu alayhi wasalam) said: "It is unlawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the last day to travel the distance of one day and one night without a Mahram accompanying her." (al-Bukhari)

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the Messenger of Allah (salalahu alayhi wasalam) said: "A woman must not travel for three days except with a Mahram." (Agreed Upon)

Furthermore, we all know the dispensation that women have for visiting the Masajid in the Hadith of the Prophet (salalahu alayhi wasalam) however what did the scholars say about young women attending?

FIFTH CONTENTION
The uncontrolled and unnecessary free-mixing of genders so that they sit next to or behind each other.

The proof
Again, this can be seen on many of the clips, here is just one
Poverty of the Soul ᴴᴰ - By: Yasmin Mogahed - YouTube (at 8:30 in the clip)

The question
Is it permissible for men and women to mix freely within these gatherings sometimes wearing clothing and make-up that attracts the opposite gender and if not then why is the seating arrangement, entrance/exit the same for all when with a little effort, this can be stopped?

SIXTH CONTENTION

Scholars should all know the Fiqhi maxim:

درء المفاسد أولى من جلب المصالح

(Avoiding corrupting elements is preferred over achieving benefits)

The question
When weighing up all the Mafasid that are involved with Muslim females lecturing mixed audiences do you still feel that it should be permissible? Yes, the Fiqhi maxim "Hardship brings with it a relaxing (Tayseer) of the rules" can be implemented for female medical doctors who need to learn gynecology etcetera, but has the Ummah reached such a low in its level of male scholarship that it now requires non-qualified sisters to lecture mixed audiences about Islam when it clearly contains numerous dubious issues and it would it not be better for us to steer away from these for that which is clear?

JUSTIFICATION FOR ABOVE QUESTIONS

While in the normal sphere of things, the previous questions may seem as an intrusion into the private life and choices of an individual, but in reality they are not. When a person chooses to take to the limelight and specialize as an Islamic preacher/lecturer they clearly have a responsibility to at least outwardly live according to what they preach as they fill the role of an exemplar for the young, impressionable youth they seek to engage. This principle in the Hadith Sciences is known as 'Adalah and it was stated clearly by Sayyiduna Umar (Radi Allah anhu) when he said:

“The people would be accepted [or rejected] based on revelation in the time of the Messenger of Allah, (salalahu alayhi wasalam), and revelation has ended. Now we can only accept [or reject] you by what is apparent to us from your actions. Thus whoever appears good to us, we trust him and draw him near, while we know nothing of his secrets- Allah will bring him to account regarding his secrets- and whoever appears evil to us, we will not trust him and we will not befriend him, even if [someone] said: ‘His secrets are good"

It has been noticed in numerous videos that the sister can clearly be seen welcoming questions from the audience and she attempts to answer them. Simply being Arab is not a qualifier for a person to speak and pronounce Quran and Hadith correctly and it certainly does not ensure scholarship. Based upon all the above and other points that I do not have time to go into now, is it really objectionable for people who wish to attend her lectures, and those with a responsibility towards their children, to not ascertain the credentials of the individual lecturing, in much the same way that a person would do if they were going to attend a professional skills workshop?

From the guidance that we find in the Sunnah is the narration of Abdullah ibn Mas'ood (radi Allah anhu) that is Marfu Hukman in which he stated:

"Verily you live in times in which there are many scholars and few speakers. Few people ask and there are many to give. Actions are far more than the diversions. A time will come when there will be many speakers and few scholars. Many who ask and few who give…."

If you are able to provide proofs to defend one or all of the above questions then is it still not permissible for there to be a difference of opinion between scholars and students of knowledge or is that no longer something feasibly acceptable?

The Adab of Ikhtilaaf (The etiquette when difference of opinion occurs)

Whenever I write articles of any kind, I try to not only get across the Haq or truth in the matter as understood by me, but to also benefit the reader in other ways. In this article, I feel that it would be useful for us to briefly touch on the point of Adab al-Ikhtilaaf.

There is no doubt, that difference of opinion has occurred in the past and will continue to occur in the future, but should these differences of opinion lead us to the scare-tactics and slandering of our opponent as witnessed recently?

Well, let us look back at how the greatest people of this Ummah would differ? If we take a glimpse at the lives of the Sahabah, we find that there are scores of examples wherein the Sahabah would differ, but that they would not resort to such ill-behaviour:

Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu) differed with Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood (radi Allahu anhu) in more than 100 issues some of which were related to the application of Hadd and issues pertaining to Halaal and Haraam and yet that did not stop them from having the utmost respect for each other so much so that Umar (RA) said in reference to Ibn Mas'ood (RA): "[He is] the trove of Fiqh or Ilm that enriched the people of Qadisiyah."

Despite, the huge differences that the School of Hadith had with the School of Ra’y, when the great Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) was buried, the great Muhaddith Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj said, "The complete Fiqh of Kufa has been buried with him; may Allah have mercy upon him and upon us." Despite, the scores of issues in which Imam al-Shafi'ee (RA) differs with Imam Abu Hanifah (RA), he said, "The people are the children of Imam Abu Hanifah in the affairs of Fiqh"

Much more can be said on this topic, but I feel the essence of what I want to say has been beautifully summarized in what Shaikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) said:

“As for the difference in opinion that occurs in rulings (ahkaam) then they are more than can be agreed upon. And if every time there is a difference of opinion between the Muslims they turn away from each other then there would not remain any unity or brotherhood. Indeed the leaders of all Muslims, Abu Bakr and Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) differed with each other, but did not intend except goodness.”

Final Thought

It is clear from this and my previous article on the subject of young female speakers addressing mixed audiences that I am vehemently against this practice and do not see how comparisons can be drawn between the learned muhaddithaat of the past who maintained the Islamic standards required of them and roving motivational speakers of today. If my fellow students of knowledge and our dear scholars are able to answer the contentions above and are satisfied that what they are doing is acceptable to the requirements of their deen and it does not affect their taqwa, then let us humbly disagree on this issue, but agree to meet each other with a smile and the greetings of peace for our brotherhood should not be compromised and our unity not be fragmented.

TAFSIR OF SURA AL-ANKABUT {1-11} - BY IBN QAYYIM

1. Alif Lam Mim.

2. Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: "We believe," and will not be tested.

3. And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allah will certainly make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars, (although Allah knows all that before putting them to test).

4. Or those who do evil deeds think that they can outstrip Us (i.e. escape Our Punishment)? Evil is that which they judge!

5 .Whoever hopes for the Meeting with Allah, then Allah's Term is surely coming. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

6. And whosoever strives, he strives only for himself. Verily, Allah is free of all wants from the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists).

7. Those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah (Monotheism) and in Messenger Muhammad, and do not apostate because of the harm they receive from the polytheists], and do righteous good deeds, surely, We shall remit from them their evil deeds and shall reward them according to the best of that which they used to do.

8. And We have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents, but if they strive to make you join with Me (in worship) anything (as a partner) of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do.

9. And for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and other items of Faith) and do righteous good deeds, surely, We shall make them enter in (the entrance of) the righteous (i.e. in Paradise).

10. Of mankind are some who say: "We believe in Allah," but if they are made to suffer for the sake of Allah, they consider the trial of mankind as Allah's punishment, and if victory comes from your Lord, (the hypocrites) will say: "Verily! We were with you (helping you)." Is not Allah Best Aware of
what is in the breast of the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns).

11. Verily, Allah knows those who believe, and verily, He knows the hypocrites [i.e. Allah will test the people with good and hard days to discriminate the good from the wicked (although Allah knows all that before putting them to test)].

(AI-'Ankabut, 29 : 1-11)
TAFSIR OF SURA AT-TAKATHUR {BY IBN KATHIR}

1. The piling up diverts you,

2. Until you visit the graves.

3. Verily, but you shall soon know.

4. Again, verily but you shall soon know.

5. Verily, were you to know with certainty,

6. You will certainly see the Hell-fire!

7. Again, you will see it with certainty of sight!

8. Then shall you be questioned that Day concerning pleasure.
Hadith 2 :

‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

One day we were sitting in the company of Allah’s Massenger (peace be upon him), when there appeared before us a man dressed in extremely white clothing; his hair was extraordinarily black. There were no signs of travel on him and none of us knew him. He (proceeded until) he sat before the Massenger (peace be upon him), his knees supported against the Prophet’s, his palms placed on his thighs, and said, “O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Islam is to testily that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and that you establish prayer, pay zakah (obligatory charity), observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to (Allah’s) House if you have the means to do so.” (The inquirer) said, “You have told the truth.” ‘Umar bin AI-Khattb commented, “It astonished us that he would ask and then verify the truth.” (The inquirer) said, “Inform me about iman (faith).” Allah’s Messenger replied, “It is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Massengers, the Day of Judgment, and that you believe in Divine Preordination, whether good or bad.” (The inquirer) responded, “You have told the truth.” He then said, “Inform me about ihsan (beneficence).” Allah’s Messenger said, “(It is) that you worship Allah as if you see Him, for though you don't see Him, (you know) He sees you.” The inquirer said, “Inform me about the hour (of the Day of Judgment).” The Messenger of Allah remarked, “The one being asked knows no more than the questioner.” The inquirer said, “Tell me some of its signs.” He (the Holy Prophet) said, “(They are) that the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress (or master), and that you will find barefooted, destitute goat-herders vying with one another in the construction of magnificent buildings.” The narrator, (‘Umar bin Al-Khattab] said, “Then he [the inquirer] went on his way but I stayed with him [Allah’s Messenger] for a long while.” He then said to me, “’Umar, do you know who this inquirer was?’ I replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He remarked, ‘It was (the angel) Gabriel. He came to you [people] in order to teach you your religion.’”

“The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) delivered an eloquent sermon, which greatly moved us and sent a wave of fear into our hearts and our eyes shed tears. We said to him, ‘This sermon seems like the last advice; then tell us something more as advice.’ He said, ‘I advise you to fear Allah (because of your obligations to Allah) and to hear and obey even a slave who may be put in authority over you. Those of you who survive me will notice many differences. It will be incumbent upon you to follow my Sunnah (tradition) and the practices of my rightly guided successors (Caliphs) and hold fast with these precepts and traditions and beware of innovations and inventions in religion, because every innovation leads to the wrong path.’ ”
“That which is lawful is clear, and that which is unlawful is clear and between the two of them are doubtful [or ambiguous] matters about which not many people are knowledgeable. Thus, he who avoids these doubtful matters certainly clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor. But he who falls into the doubtful matters falls into that which is unlawful, like the shepherd who pastures around a sanctuary, all but grazing therein. Verily, every king has a sanctuary, and Allah's sanctuary is His prohibitions. In the body there is a piece of flesh which, if it is sound, all of the body is sound, and which, if it is diseased, all of the body is diseased. This part of the body is the heart.’ ”

The Miracle of Positive Thinking
By Sister Shahnaaz Bemath

Thinking positive can work miracles. You may have been told to “guard your thoughts”, but felt the advice to be pointless. After all, your thoughts are private. How can they possibly affect someone else? The fact is, thoughts do seem to boomerang in some mysterious ways. Science has not found a way to measure them as they have invisible sound waves. In order to understand how positive thinking works, and how to use it efficiently, it is important to understand the power of negative thinking.

“Negative thoughts and tensions are like birds. We cannot stop them from flying near us but, we can certainly stop them from making a nest in our mind.”

The mind can be directed towards positive thinking or negative thinking. The power of thought is a neutral power. The way one thinks determines whether the results are positive and beneficial or negative and harmful. It is the same of energy acting in different ways. Persistent inner work can change habits of thoughts. You must be willing to put energy and time to avoid negative thinking and pursue positive thinking, in order to change your mental attitude. Think of those things which are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, in other words, to fill your mind with noble, good thoughts, leaving no room for negative ones to take root.
The Noble Messenger of ALLAH (peace be upon him) has reported that ALLAH, The Most Wise, said: “I treat my servant as how he thinks of Me” (Hadith- Bukhari/ Muslim). In other words, ALLAH TA’ALA treats His servant in the way how he thinks of ALLAH, what he hopes from and how he sets his hopes on ALLAH. So, those who come positive and with a great hope to the door of Mercy of the Almighty Creator will Insha Allah not return empty-handed.

The most powerful weapon you have at your disposal is Du'a (prayer). Use it and use it often. The basis of prayer is to lift us and situations to Almighty ALLAH -- an inner act of visualisation. A further step is to contemplate on our beautiful teachings of Islam -- this involves controlling and directing out thoughts. A simple way to think of this is to imagine your mind to be like a garden. That garden can be spoilt and overrun by negative, destructive thoughts (weeds), or it can become a place of peace and harmony by the cultivation of flowers (uplifting thoughts).

“Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers. Or you can grow weeds.”

Are you prone to depression? Do you see your life as a hopeless mess... consider yourself a failure? If you do, then you will close your mind, see no opportunities, and behave and react in such ways, as to repel people and opportunities. You let the power of negative thinking rule your life. Try replacing such negative thoughts with positive ones. Talk to your beloved ALLAH, ALLAH does not create a lock without a key, and ALLAH doesn't give you problems without its solutions. Trust HIM! While recognising these problems, picture yourself as mastering each one. Visualise yourself handling each situation creatively; being a success; gradually allowing your given potential to blossom.

The beloved Messenger of ALLAH (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) advised us if you look forward to good things, it will happen In'Shaa'ALLAH. Thinking positive is a very important element of Islam. Always think that ALLAH has a plan for you, if something goes wrong, it will probably lead you to something good. HE is working things out for you, even if you don't feel it. Have faith and be thankful. Where faith and hope grows, miracles blossoms, ALLAHU AKBAR!

At first, this kind of thought control may seem like an inner game -- but you'll be surprised at how, slowly but surely, your outer circumstances begin to change. For thought precedes action, and the right thoughts precede a chain of good actions. Destructive thoughts, on the other hand, act as poisoning agents. They embitter and limit the thinker, preventing him or her from developing good relationships, because others sense the wrong thoughts telepathically, and shy away instinctively.

Conversely, if you greet people with the thought that they'll probably be nice to know, such a positive thought will affect their response. If you're afraid of someone, replace that fear with a thought which recognises that the person's given potential "core" is probably hidden under layers of unhappiness and wrong thinking. Silently bless that person, and ask that his or her true self be given a chance to manifest.

A friend was once terribly upset because someone was spreading false rumours about her. She could not deny the rumour publicly. All she could do was pray for the woman, try to think about her charitably and visualise her acting differently. She did this consistently for some weeks. One day, unexpectedly, the woman phoned her to apologise and say she'd been mistaken, Subhaan-ALLAH! It seemed like a miracle! But right thinking can work miracles... Life has many different chapters for us. One bad chapter doesn't mean the end of the book. Be positive and keep your faith in ALLAH. Once we function in harmony with ALLAH'S beautiful laws of love and forgiveness -- and this includes spreading good, true and beautiful thoughts -- our lives will flower as they were meant to.

“Think positive, Think different. Don't waste your precious energy on negative thoughts.”

Decide that from today, from this very moment, you are leaving negative thinking behind, and starting on the way towards positive thinking and behaviour. It is never too late. Soon your life will turn into a fascinating, wonderful journey. Wake up every morning with the thought that something beautiful is about to happen. Let’s welcome each day with a smile and bid farewell with a smile. We thank ALLAH for HIS blessings. Take advantage of our positive energy and employ them in doing well in this life. Let's learn, read and after that, we will find the entire universe will extend to us it's heart and the whole world will hug us with its beauty... Subhaan-ALLAH!

There is something beautiful in life. You just have to find it....be positive and it will find you!

“I love you, mom,” whispered Yusuf as he wrapped the soft pashmina shawl around his mother’s shoulders. The vibrant peach contrasted with the dark rings that had grown under her eyes lately, but their brightness had not faded.

Her eyes lit up as she stroked the delicate embroidery on the edge of the shawl, “And this…Yusuf?”

Yusuf looked at her with the excitement of a young boy unpacking his first bicycle, “Wait ma…there’s more,” he cried, as he removed a burgundy jewellery box. Presenting it in front of his mother, like they were the crown jewels, he gingerly lifted the lid to reveal a string of exquisite cultured pearls, delicately strung together with small black pearls breaking the shimmer of the white pearls.
“Yusuf!” exclaimed his mother, her eyes brimming, “What’s all this?”

Yusuf stepped back and looked at his mother holding the pearl necklace close to her chest, admiring it, “Mom, always wanted a pearl necklace….”
“But it must have cost you a small fortune,” said Saffiyah as she held the pearls up to the light, studying the delicate changes of colour as she turned the necklace, “Why now…what’s special?”

“It’s my mother’s day!” he beamed.
“Er..,” began Saffiyah as she craned her neck to look at the calendar behind her, “But it’s not mother’s day. Not for a while, yet?” a puzzled look settling on her face.
“I didn’t say it was Mother’s day,” replied Yusuf, “I said it was MY mother’s day. But let me explain….”
“You remember I told you about Nasser who recently moved here from the coast?”
Saffiyah nodded in acknowledgement.

“Last night I met him at Sheikh’s program and asked him why he always begged sheikh for duas. I just found it strange that he would always insist that Sheikh make dua for him. He gave me an odd reply – he asked me if my mother was alive, and if I had fifteen minutes. I confirmed that I had both. We sat at the back of the masjid and he told me his story.”

Yusuf paused to pour some tea, adding a sugar to each cup, handing one to his mother he continued, “Nasser told me that since his door of dua (supplication) had closed a long time ago, he had to seek another door for dua. Not understanding, I asked him what he meant. He was silent for a long time, and I thought perhaps I said something wrong, but he just looked at me and smiled. Wiping a tear from his eye he told me that his mother passed away when he was only five years old. He said that he could still remember the smell of her hair after she washed it, but remembered little else.”

Yusuf watched his mother sipping her tea and noticed just how wrinkled her hands had become, the gold wedding ring still sat gracefully on her ring finger. She always took pride in grooming her nails, buffing them to a perfect shine.

“After Nasser’s mother passed away he lived in the care of his aunties. They were good to him and cared for him as one of their own. They bought him what he needed and he had much of what he needed. Then he told me “You know, Joe, no one can replace the embrace of a mother. And no one can replace the dua (prayer) of a mother. I lost that dua a long time ago.” Then I thought of all the duas you make for me - how often when I rush out of the house you always say, “Yusuf, slow down, Allah Ta'ala be with you!” “Allah Hafiz.” “Yusuf, may Allah Ta'ala make your children the coolness of your eye.”

“Ma…I never really cherished those duas until I heard Nasser’s story,” said Yusuf, dabbing his eye with a tissue, “I never knew that those were treasures beyond measure. And then it made some sense to me of what Sheikh said when he quoted Abdulla Ibn 'Abbas (RA), "If any Muslim obeys Allah regarding his parents, Allah will open two gates of the Garden for him. If there is only one parent, then one gate will be opened. If one of them is angry, then Allah will not be pleased with him until that parent is pleased with him."

“And when Nasser told me – ‘Joe (as Yusuf was referred to by his friends), you know, I will never be able to call anyone in this world Mum, and I will never know the embrace of a mother. You still have it, Joe, value it, treasure it,’ I realised that what Allah had favoured me with was something so special that I couldn’t just celebrate it once a year and call it mother’s day. I decided that from now MY Mother’s day will be Every Day! - Yesterday, today and tomorrow will all be mother’s day. I can never repay you, but I know the heart of a mother asks for no repayment. And…if I can do nothing else for my mother’s day then I will at least thank Allah that he allowed my door of dua to be open for one more day.”

“Forgive me ma…..” Yusuf choked, “I need to do so much more for you….”

Saffiyah clasped his hands and stroked his face, “You are a good son, Yusuf, Allah Ta'ala will grant you lots of goodness in this world and the next.”

By Umme Ammarah

(For our readers in the Northern Hemisphere save this article for later in the year when winter creeps in!)
It is said winter is a time when people suffer from so called winter blues. But it is interesting to see how many people welcome winter because they see it in a different light. Instead of being down and in active you can be pro active revive your energy in ibadah (worship), increase your good deeds, take care of your obligations and earn the pleasure of Allah all at the same time. Here are some tips to benefit from winter:

1. FASTING
Winter is the best season for the believer because Allah Ta’ala makes worship easy for him. This is because in winter, the believer can fast during the day with ease without suffering from hunger and thirst. The days are short and cold, and he therefore doesn't feel the hardship of fasting…
It is reported The Beloved Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: "Fasting in the winter is the easy prize’
'Umar bin al-Khattab(RA) said: "Winter is the prize of the worshippers."

2. QADHA (missed)FASTS
We all know that making up the days of missed fasting is fardh (compulsory) on every adult Muslim man and woman and not doing so is a sin. So if we have missed a fast for a valid reason (travel, sickness etc) we need to "catch-up".
Thus, we should hasten to fast the number of days we missed and what better opportunity than this? How much easier could it get? The days are short and the weather is cool, so you don't really get thirsty or even feel hungry.

3. SALAAT
The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) is reported to have said: "Winter is the best season for the believer. Its nights are long for him to pray in, and its days are short for him to fast in." [Hadith-Majma' az-Zawa'id' (3/203)]
As for praying at night in the winter due to its long nights, one can have his share of sleep and then get up to pray afterwards and recite all that he usually recites of the Qur'an while he has enjoyed enough rest.

4.WARM WOOLIES
The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: "Whoever feeds a hungry believer will be fed by Allah on the Day of Judgement from the fruits of Paradise, and whoever quenches his thirst will have his thirst quenched from the Sealed Nectar, and whoever clothes him will be clothed from the green silk of Paradise.”
Try and involve our own family in these activities. Buy some blankets, gloves and warm hats and take your kids along to distribute it to the needy. There is so much good we can do if we just put ourselves forward.

5. HOT SOUPS
We can prepare some nutritious soups for our family and also hand out to the poor in and around our neighbourhood. I’m sure a hot cup of soup would definitely be appreciated on a cold winter day.
The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: “Worship the Most Compassionate, Feed people and spread salaam (greetings) and you will safely enter paradise.” (Hadith –TirmidhiI)

6. COZY FAMILY TIME
Allah says in the Noble Qur’aan :”Oh you who believe save yourselves and families from the fire.” (Quran 66:6) .So plan such activities that will bring us closer to Allah. Be innovative and have fun within the confinements of Shariah.
As it is cold, we can enjoy quality time indoors with our family which we often find difficult because we are so "busy"! Plan and do such activities that will bond the family and bring us closer to Allaah. Let the kids be involved in what you plan. Ask them for suggestions so they feel they are part of it. Sit around the warm fire/heater and read some stories of the Sahabah (RA) to the children and introduce them to the true heroes of the world or engage them in any such activities that will be beneficial.
Mums and dads… use these long nights to re-kindle that flame of love.

7. KNOWLEDGE AND WORSHIP
Allah Ta'ala says in verse of Quraan: “verily, in the Remembrance of Allah hearts find peace and satisfaction.” (Qur’aan 13:28)
Use this time indoors to learn duas (prayers) from the sunnah, in recitation of Qur’aan, make the Zikr of Allah etc..The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said; “everyday Allah showers kindness and charity on his slaves and no kindness is better than inspiration of His remembrance that Allah grants to his slaves.(Hadith-tabarani)
Choose a good Islaamic book and increase your Islaamic knowledge. A Believers thirst for knowledge is never quenched. He continues to hear and learn until he enters Paradise Hadith-Tirmidhi. It was narrated that Ibn Mas’ud (RA)said: “Welcome to winter! Blessings descend in it, its nights are long to pray in, and its days are short to fast in.” This is why Mu’adh(RA) wept on his deathbed and said: “I weep because I will miss the thirst I felt when I fasted, praying at night during the winter, and sitting knee to knee with the scholars during the gatherings of knowledge.”

8. PONDER OVER ALLAH'S GREATNESS & THANK HIM FOR HIS BLESSINGS
Actually, if you think about it, winter is a big blessing from among the innumerable, uncountable blessings of Allah. He is honoring us by the bounty of His Giving, His Gracious Blessing and His Great Favour, so that we may be able to pray at night, fast during the day and worship Him

9. REMEMBER REALITIES OF HELL
The Noble Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)said: “Hell complained to its Lord, saying: “Parts of me have consumed the other parts.” So, He allowed it two breaths of exhalation: one in winter and one in summer. As for its breath in winter, that is the bitter cold, and its breath in the summer is the extreme heat.”
Among the virtues of winter is that it reminds one of the extreme cold of Hell and pushes one to seek refuge from it and to do such noble actions that will ensure one is protected from Jahannam (Hell)!

May Allaah Ta’ala, Most High enable us all to make best use of our winters. Ameen.
