Every Muslim must know about it. Because often people don’t care and knowledge about Salam. However, the meaning has completely changed by wrong pronunciation as you mentioned above. -

we should properly say assalam o alaikum and Prphet Muhammad May peace and blessings be upon him also used to add wa rahmatullahe wabarakat. and not more than this bcoz it makes sentence too long and cause waste of time and make it troublesom for listener

if some one says u assalam o alaikum wa rahmatullahe wa barakat then u should respond by saying" wa alaikum" this is what once Prophet Muhammad Sal Allaho alaihe wassalam replied to one companion. when he asked prophet Muhammad may paece and blessings be upon him that why u dont added another word then prophet muhammad may paece and blessings be upon him said u already have added enough sentence"wa rahmatullahe wa barakat" so i didnt consider it neccessary to add more words to make sentence too long.sigpic

so proper way is if some one say u assalam o alaikum u should say wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahe wabarakatahu and if some say u assalam o alaikum wa rahmatullahe wabarakat then u should say "wa alaikum" or just wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahe wa barakat.sigpic
