  • Major Responsibilities Of Muslim Parents Towards Their Children

Islam is not concerned only with the doings of a single person; rather Islam takes into consideration the doing of a person as a whole. Thus, every Muslim in Islam has an obligation towards other Muslim whether it is in social or familial relations.

In familial relations, parents have a huge responsibility and obligation when it comes to children. In Islam, children are a responsibility of parents and it is necessary for a parent to up bring and groom a child in the best of both religious and worldly manner.

The lines below discuss the major responsibilities of a Muslim parent regarding the upbringing of a child.
    In Quran Allah Almighty says:

“O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell)…” (66:6)

In the light of this ayah, the primary responsibility of a Muslim parent is to protect his or her children from the fire of Hell. Thus, for a Muslim parent it is imperative that they upbring their child in such a way that he or she grows up to be a good Muslim who follows the instructions of Allah Almighty.

For a Muslim parent, it is necessary to tell children about the preaching of Islam and tell them the way of truth. In Quran, Allah Almighty says:

“And (remember) when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him: “O my son! Join not in worship others with God. Verily, joining others in worship with God is a great wrong indeed.” (31:13)

From this ayah, it is clear that a Muslim parent needs to tell the child about right and wrong and inculcate Islamic beliefs and values into the child. In this regard, a parent needs to tell the child about the five pillars of Islam, provide them the education of Holy Quran, tell them the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and provide them an atmosphere where they are able to understand and practice Islam.

Besides teaching them about Islam, a parent needs to treat all his or her children fairly and provide them with the necessities of life. For a parent it is necessary to consider the fact that all the children are equally loveable and they have to be treated equally and fairly. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in this regard:

“Fear God and treat your children fairly.” (Muslim)

Therefore, for a Muslim parent it is imperative to treat the children fairly and provide them with all the necessities of life whether its education, a conducive environment and a healthy lifestyle that helps them stay healthy. In this regard, Islam encourages that a mother should give suck to each and every child for at least two years. Allah Almighty says in Quran:

“The mothers shall give suck to their children for two whole years, (that is) for those (parents) who desire to complete the term of suckling.” (2:233)

From this ayah, it is clear that although it is not mandatory upon a mother to give suck to the child, however, it is encouraged that the child should be provided milk of mother for at least two years. The scientific findings of today attest to this fact.

In short, Muslim parents have a great responsibility towards their children and it is necessary upon them to upbring the child in a way that they become a practicing Muslim and a better human being.
