While counselling his Mureeds, Sidi Abu Hasan al-Shadhili, may Allah be Merciful to him, said:--
"If you desire to look towards Allah with the eyes of faith and firm belief at all
times, then be thankful for His favours, and be content with His Decrees. Whatever
favour you have is from Allah. Then, whenever evil touches you, call upon Him.
If you desire it to turn away from you, or yourself to turn away from it; worship
Allah lovingly, not bargaining with Him, but knowingly, with due respect and
modesty."
