Deadly blasts hit Sufi shrine Data Darbar in Lahore Pakistan

Suicide bombers have launched a triple attack on a Sufi shrine in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore.

At least 35 people died in the blasts at the popular Data Darbar shrine late on Thursday evening, officials say.

At least 175 other people were hurt in the blasts, believed to be the first targeting a shrine in Lahore.

Thousands of people were visiting the shrine at the time, officials say. It holds the remains of a Sufi saint, Abul Hassan Ali Hajvery.

The shrine is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year from both Sunni and Shia traditions.

Khusro Pervez, commissioner of Lahore said two of the attacks took place in the main courtyard and one in the lower level of the shrine.

Officials say they believe the bombers used devices packed with ball-bearings to maximise the impact of their attack.

Lahore has been hit by a series of bomb attacks, including a suicide blast at anti-terrorist offices in March, when at least 13 people died.

In May, more than 90 people were killed in a double attack on the minority Ahmadi sect in the city.

At least 35 people have been killed in two suicide bombs at a Muslim shrine in Pakistan.

Men decorate the shrine in Lahore where the suicide bombers struck
The attackers struck as thousands of people were visiting the Data Darabar shrine, where a famous Sufi saint is buried.
Islamic extremists consider Sufis to be heretics and have often targeted them in attacks.
The first suicide bomber detonated his explosives in a large underground room where visitors sleep and wash themselves before praying.
Minutes later, a second bomber detonated his explosives in a large yard upstairs as people tried to flee the first attack, said government official Khusro Pervez.
Police are still investigating the source of a third blast that followed the two suicide bombers.
At least 25 of those wounded in the attacks are in critical condition, said Pervez.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings.
Lahore is Pakistan's second-largest city and capital of its most prosperous province, Punjab.
It is a key political, military, and cultural centre and has been the scene of some of the most spectacular Islamic militant attacks in the country over the past year.
On May 28, gunmen and a suicide squad lobbed grenades and sprayed bullets in attacks on two mosques in the eastern city packed with worshippers from the minority Ahmadi sect.
At least 93 people were killed and dozens wounded.
The government has been criticized for lacking the will to crack down on militants in Punjab.
Many of them are part of now-banned groups started with government support in the 1980s and '90s to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan and pressure archenemy India.
Many of these groups have formed links with the Pakistani Taliban, which has recruited militants to carry out attacks.

i visited the shrine today and saw the place where the suicide bomber blasted himself and i would say that Thanks to ALLAH that he didnt enter the inner circle close to the shrine otherwise the number of martyrs would have been many more.
Hadrat Anas Radi ALLAH Taala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah Peace And Blessings Be Upon Him has said, “Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Qur’an is Yasin. Allah records anyone who recites Yasin as having recited the Qur’an ten times.”
