the arabs of makkah were so used to worshipping thier many gods(polytheism) that they would have opposed fiercely any suggestion of believing in the one god,almighty allah(monotheism).this is why for the first three years after prophethood,the holy Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him wisely extended his message to certain selected individuals who would consider his message with an open mind.this proved to be a successful approach and the number of muslims steadily began to grow.the centre of early religious activities was the house of prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him loyal companion arqam.

among the women,the first to accept islam was khadija Radi ALLAH Taala ANha,Abu Bakr Radi ALLAH Taala ANhu among the men,ali among the children and bilal among the slaves.
zaid ibn haaritha was the first freed slave to come within the boundaries of islam.
